Congress is set to reintroduce the Freedom to Vote Act in the coming weeks. This bill would protect the right to vote, end unfair partisan gerrymandering, and shine a light on the flood of dark money that allows billionaires to buy our elections in secret. Better yet, it would make Election Day a federal holiday and expand access to voting.
In an ideal world, voting rights should be a nonpartisan issue. But far-right authoritarian politicians have spent decades trying to undermine the Voting Rights Act. And with help from right-wing justices on the Supreme Court, states have imposed all kinds of restrictions meant to suppress the vote.
As the 2024 election cycle begins in earnest, we must keep the campaign to protect the freedom to vote front and center.
