** Indigenous Peoples Continue to Push for Rights, Inclusion, and Direct Financing in Climate Change Negotiations Prior to UNFCCC COP28

From June 5-15, 2023, the Bonn Climate Conference took place in Bonn, Germany, and brought together meetings of two United Nations Framework Convention on Climate (UNFCCC) subsidiary bodies: the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice and the Subsidiary Body for Implementation of the UNFCCC. The meetings set the agenda for discussions and a road map for the upcoming UNFCCC COP28 in Dubai in December. Read more. ([link removed])

** The Violent Cartography of Lithium in Brazil: Indigenous and Traditional Communities Struggle with the Giant of Transition Minerals in Brazil

** Cultural Survival Condemns Violent Repression in Jujuy, Argentina and Raises Concerns about Limits to Indigenous Rights

On June 15, 2023, the Constitutional Convention of the province of Jujuy, in the north of Argentina, approved a constitutional reform that severely rolls back achievements made at the national level in terms of human rights and Indigenous Peoples’ rights. ** General Motors' Thacker Pass Investment Threatens Indigenous Peoples' Rights

On June 15, 2023, Mighty Earth released a report documenting how General Motors (GM), a global leader in the automobile industry, is facilitating the violation of Indigenous Peoples' right to self-determination with its investment in Lithium Americas’ Thacker Pass lithium mine in Nevada. The report “GM Wants “Everybody In” on Greenwashing ([link removed]) ” also shows how the auto manufacturer is, from multiple perspectives, failing on protecting people and the climate. Read more. The Securing Indigenous Peoples’ Rights in the Green Economy (SIRGE) Coalition welcomes the European Parliament's common position on the proposed European Union due diligence rules. The position of the European Parliament supports the full respect for the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in the new Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD). ** Climate Change Frontliners: Post Typhoon Mawar in Guåhan

My landlord hasn’t removed the wooden boards from my windows yet. So, every morning I wake up to a dark apartment. It’s disorienting as much as it is a reminder of the darkness that is consuming our island; a darkness that is both literal and figurative. Literal, because half of the island’s power has yet to be restored. Figurative, because economic disparity is palpable (and sickening), especially in this time. This time that is post-disaster. This time that is just weeks after Typhoon Mawar stripped the people of Guåhan, my island and people, for everything we had. Read more ([link removed]) .

** Sand and Gravel Mining, Real Estate, and “Green Energy” Threaten the Pine Barrens of Southeastern Massachusetts

The pine barrens in southeastern Massachusetts are under threat from developments, but more so from sand and gravel mining, real estate, and so-called “green” energy development. The unique environment of the pine barrens has been formed over thousands of years; the delicate balance of the ecosystem includes the smaller plants, the animals, and the chemistry of the soil. A year ago, UN human rights experts expressed grave concerns about the continuous encroachment on traditional Maasai lands and housing, accompanied by a lack of transparency in, and consultation with Maasai Peoples, during decision-making and planning. This trend culminated in security forces’ violence against the Maasai who were protecting their ancestral land in the Loliondo Division of Ngorongoro District, in northern Tanzania. San Manuel is a small Indigenous community of the Tseltal and Ch'ol-speaking people, located in the first canyon that forms the first two mountain ranges in front of the plains of the Gulf of Mexico and at the height of the city of Palenque, Chiapas, Mexico. To counteract the generic and globalized media landscape, and with the objective of preserving the right to their own communication, a group of youth and young adults began to work through the collective Tseltal Bachajón Comunicación (TBC) to form Radio Comunitaria Ixim, The Voice of Our People.
