The latest news from Maggie Throup MP
** Westminster Despatches
------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Resident,
It has been an extremely busy couple of weeks in Parliament and I want to update you on the latest work I am doing as your Member of Parliament.
Firstly, I know that our community was shocked about the attacks in Nottingham that tragically took the lives of three innocent people. My thoughts are with the families who lost loved ones. What was particularly admirable was how the community in and around Nottingham came together to show support for the victims and their families. In Parliament, I was one of many MPs to contribute to a debate on the Nottingham attacks and you can view it via this link ([link removed]) .
As a backbench MP, I always enjoy participating in parliamentary debates and questions on health issues. On Monday, I asked the Health Secretary whether he would commit to implementing in full the recommendations made in the Khan Review on achieving the ambition of England becoming Smokefree by 2030. You can view my question here ([link removed]) .
Other parliamentary questions to the Department of Health and Social Care include asking the Secretary of State for Health whether he would look at locating Community Diagnostic Centres away from hospitals and into heart of communities such as shopping centres. You can view my question here ([link removed]) . I also requested an update from the Health Minister as to when the Government plans to introduce the 9pm watershed on junk food advertising. You can view my contribution via this link ([link removed]) .
Staying with the junk food theme, I’ve taken part in two debates relating to Obesity and Fatty Liver Disease and on Ultra-Processed Foods (UPFs). I progressed my hypothesis that there is an addiction to UPFs and foods high in fat, sugar, and salt, leading to obesity as well as other long term health conditions. During both debates I urged the Government to tackle obesity and the rise of UPF consumption through intervention. You can view my contribution on the obesity and fatty liver debate here ([link removed] ) and the UPF debate via this link ([link removed] ) .
Erewash residents often contact me about roadworks that continually reappear on the same stretch of road. I know how much of a nuisance this can be and over recent weeks this has caused congestion in Long Eaton and Sawley. In Parliament, I asked the Transport Minister what his Department is doing to ensure that utility companies better co-ordinate their work schedules to minimise disruption to road users. You can view my contribution here ([link removed]) .
Sticking with the transport theme, I formally submitted my comments on the “Greener Towns 20mph” Public Consultation to Derbyshire County Council. Having carefully considered the proposals at length, it is my opinion that the County Council should not proceed with the 20mph zone trial in Long Eaton, and instead look at how, for example, it can improve the scheduling of roadworks in order to reduce congestion and cut the length of time motorists are made to queue in traffic with their engines idling. You can view my letter to Derbyshire County Council here ([link removed]) .
One of my highlights of the Summer is always the Long Eaton Carnival. This year, the weather was fantastic, and I was delighted to see so many families enjoying themselves throughout the day. As well as visiting the different stalls, I was delighted to judge the floats taking part once again in the Parade. I would like to thank the carnival committee, all the volunteers, the stall holders and everyone for making this such a fantastic event.
In addition to the Long Eaton Carnival, I’ve had a busy few weeks visiting businesses, including family-run and expanding Goldbury Paint and Powdercoat Ltd based in Ilkeston; joined Scout leaders from the Long Eaton District for their AGM; attended Long Eaton Air Cadets’ Passing Out Parade; popped along to the Draycott Open Gardens, as well as helping numerous residents through my casework service. In the last month I have successfully resolved 492 cases for Erewash residents.
I recently met with representatives from the Department for Work and Pensions about how businesses in Erewash can become a Disability Confident Employer. Disability Confident organisations play a leading role in changing attitudes for the better. For more information about how your business can become a Disability Confident Employer please click here ([link removed]) .
I am often asked by local charities and voluntary organisations where they can apply for funding and I have developed a comprehensive document, which I am continually adding to. A recent addition is Tesco that is encouraging community and voluntary organisations in Erewash to apply for one of their community grants, further details can be found at this link ([link removed]) .
There’s good news for everyone aged 60 and over with the Government confirming that they will continue to receive free prescriptions. As our NHS marks its 75^th anniversary I would like to pay tribute to the fantastic NHS staff for safeguarding the nation’s health for so many years. I have every confidence that the NHS will continue to thrive and safeguard the nation’s health for future generations.
With best wishes,
Maggie Throup MP
Member of Parliament for Erewash
