Important vote-by-mail information for “No Party Preference” voters

California utilizes a “Modified Closed Primary” structure for presidential primaries, which means that voters only get a presidential primary ballot for the political party with which they are registered.

However, exceptions apply for voters who are registered as “No Party Preference” (NPP).

Three of California’s political parties allow voters who are registered NPP to request their ballot: The American Independent Party, the Democratic Party, and the Libertarian Party.

In order for NPP voters to request a mail ballot from one of the three parties that allow that option, they must complete a vote by mail application no later than February 25. That application can be found on the California Secretary of State’s website.

Reminder: February 18 is the last day to register to vote in the primary

There is still time to register for the March 3 primary, but the deadline of Tuesday, February 18 is fast approaching. Register online today and please help spread the word!
