Hi, it’s Anna Kaplan, Democratic candidate for Congress running against George Santos.

Today is World Refugee Day -- an international day designated by the United Nations to honor refugees around the globe. It celebrates the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home country to escape conflict or persecution.

Today is particularly special for me because I was a refugee myself. I was born to a Jewish family in Iran. One of my earliest memories was of a trip to the produce store; the shopkeeper told my mother and me not to touch the vegetables simply because we were Jewish.

When the Ayatollah overthrew the Iranian government, Jews had to flee. At the age of 13, my parents made the difficult decision to put me on a plane to America, not knowing when they’d get to see me again.

I know what it means to be persecuted for my Jewish faith. And unlike my opponent, I would never lie about my heritage to score political points.
