Dear Friend,
Happy Pride!
This month, we celebrate the LGBTQ+ community and reflect on the work of the courageous activists who sparked a powerful movement for equal rights that continues today. While much progress has been made, we must continue to support equal rights for LGBTQ+ families and protect LGBTQ+ youth in the face of growing hatred and discrimination.
This issue is personal for me. My daughter and her wife are two of the estimated 26 million Americans whose freedom to marry is protected by the Respect for Marriage Act. I was proud to cosponsor and vote for this historic legislation, which enshrined marriage equality protections under federal law. Because of this bill, my grandson can grow up without risk of his family being torn apart.
But there’s still more we need to do to ensure that all LGTBQ+ Americans are accepted for who they are. Our work must start from a simple truth: kids are kids, families are families, and every person in the United States of America deserves the freedom to be who they are.
Although Pride Month is coming to an end, I’m committed to fighting for the LGBTQ+ community year-round. Our South Jersey community is strengthened by our LGBTQ+ family, friends, and neighbors, and I will continue to stand against hate and work to end discrimination in all forms.
