Dear John,
Postmaster General Louis DeJoy is still hard at work, implementing his plans to wreck the U.S. Postal Service, in order to privatize it.
He openly brags about the “dramatic changes” in his ten-year plan, but he closely guards the details. Who needs those pesky postal regulators snooping around?
Asked by House Oversight Committee member Rep. Summer Lee about why he filed an objection to the Postal Regulatory Commission’s formal inquiry into his plans, DeJoy testified that the commission “has overstepped its authority” and that such oversight “is going to put this whole plan in jeopardy.”
Well, that’s sort of the point, isn’t it?
Only DeJoy knows the full details, but here’s what we do already know: he plans to eliminate 200 postal annexes and cut 50,000 jobs, while both increasing costs to citizens and delaying mail delivery. And, his plans are already underway.
DeJoy’s radical plans will have effects on local communities and jobs that require public debate. Tell the USPS Inspector General and the Postal Regulatory Commission to take steps to allow public feedback on Louis DeJoy’s “dramatic changes” now!
DeJoy’s already-announced cuts to the delivery network will be especially devastating for rural and Indigenous communities, who rely on the Postal Service to receive medications, Social Security checks, vote-by-mail ballots, and more. These vulnerable communities are at risk of being either overcharged or ignored by for-profit delivery services like FedEx and UPS, that don’t find such areas to be profitable enough.
Indeed, private companies often rely on the Postal Service for “last-mile delivery,” because USPS is required to deliver to everyone and maintain connections between people in a large and diverse country -- not to make profits for wealthy shareholders.
So what else has DeJoy got up his sleeve? How will his “dramatic changes” affect local communities and postal workers?
We don’t know, because his plan is to keep the public out of the review process until it’s too late to stop him.
We can’t let Louis DeJoy destroy the Postal Service. There is too much at stake. If President Biden won’t appoint the Board of Governors members needed to fire DeJoy, then we definitely need the IG and PRC to step up oversight to stop him.
Sign the petition now to tell the USPS Inspector General and Postal Regulatory Commission to allow public hearings, and bring DeJoy’s secret plans out in the open. The public needs the opportunity to make our voices in dissent heard.
Thank you for your commitment to keeping the U.S. Postal Service in service to the people, and not just providing a big return for wealthy corporate investors.
