Dear Friend,

Happy Pride Month!

It is as important as ever to fight for LGBTQ+ rights as community members and allies, particularly in the face of political attacks to strip trans people of their right to bodily autonomy and freedom, ban drag shows and other discriminatory acts.

This month, we commemorate and honor Juneteenth, the annual commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States. POV closed to observe the holiday and we hope it was a day of joyful celebration for the Black community and allies.

In June we also recognize World Elder Abuse Day, Gun Violence Awareness Day, and Father's Day, among others. At POV, inclusion and acceptance are part of our core values. The work we do embraces and embodies these values. We will continue to work toward a more just, inclusive and peaceful world for all.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of POV’s Executive Director/CEO Patti Giggans. Starting as a volunteer in 1981 and joining as staff in 1983, Patti has led the organization with tenacity, strength, and grace over the last four decades.

Under her leadership, POV has grown from a staff of seven to an agency of 70; moved locations several times; developed revolutionary intervention and prevention programming to meet community needs; maintained the longest running 24/7 emergency services hotline; founded Denim Day, the longest running sexual violence prevention education campaign; changed its name and rebranded, incorporating a new mission and vision; served over one million people and reached hundreds of millions through advocacy campaigns; influenced policy; changed hearts and minds and culture, and more!

Patti is a fierce advocate, an intersectional feminist, a warrior for peace, and staunchly dedicated to POV’s mission, staff, volunteers and survivors. Happy anniversary, Patti!

** Michael Powers, POV’s original brand photographer
1961-2023
------------------------------------------------------------

We recently lost a beloved member of the POV family. Michael Powers was part of the team (with Rebeca Mendes & Associates) that helped us change our name and develop our extraordinary photography-based brand in 2006. It was Michael who took our first portrait photos, and helped us establish our now recognized and revered brand. Following that introduction and infusion of his immense talent, he continued to volunteer for us over the years, taking honoree event photos, staff photos, creating videos and lending his creative genius to us in many ways, always with his compassionate eye on humanity.

Michael was an award winning commercial photographer, a devoted teacher, a lover of nature, a wonderful father and husband - and he always had time for POV. He loved POV and was committed to our mission and vision. He passed away from cancer quite suddenly in April at the age of sixty-two.

We are honoring Michael by naming the design space at our Metro Headquarters after him: The Michael Powers Photography and Design Studio. His memory lives on through those of us who knew him, and his spirit remains rooted in our brand.
