These court cases are costly, many come with steep fees and some can
last for years at a time.
Dear friend,
When a sheriff's deputy pulled the Martinez family van over on a
highway in rural Mississippi, their three young children witnessed
everything. They heard the deputy announce that he was looking for
"illegals," heard him threaten their father with the loss
of his permanent residency if he didn't admit to possessing
drugs and saw their mother break down in tears when another deputy
threatened to take her children.
All this invasive searching and threatening interrogation turned up
zero evidence of any criminal activity. When they were finally
released after hours of detention, they weren't even given a
traffic ticket. And every member of the family was either a U.S.
citizen or had legal status in this country.
The Martinez family was subjected to this harrowing ordeal for one
reason and one reason only: Because they looked Hispanic. As you and I
both know, looking Hispanic isn't a crime. And to help make sure
it never becomes one, the SPLC proudly filed suit on behalf of the
Martinez family.
That's why I'm reaching out to you and other committed
SPLC members - we need you to help us meet our goal of $1
million before midnight on June 30.

Litigation, like the kind we filed on behalf of the Martinezes, is
one of the most powerful tools we have to achieve our mission of
justice and human rights for all. But these court cases are costly,
many come with steep fees and some can last for years at a time. As a
nonprofit, we rely entirely on supporters like you to fund our legal
work.
