From August 21 to October 15 of 1858, Stephen A. Douglas and Abraham Lincoln crisscrossed the state of Illinois holding seven debates for an election to the state senate. Each man spoke for more than an hour, and the transcription of their remarks appeared in local, regional, and national publications.

A century-and-a-half later, we have televised debates, run like sporting events, where each candidate has at most a few minutes on each topic. That’s not enough to know what they think and how they would govern.
