John,

Seven years ago, it was still illegal for LGBTQIA+ couples to get married in Pennsylvania.

At the time, everything inside of me — my belief in equality, fairness, and the principle that no one deserves to be left behind or forgotten — told me that this was fundamentally wrong. So I did what I thought was right, and I officiated Allegheny County's first same-sex wedding in my living room.

Marriage equality is the law of the land, and this blatant discrimination seems like a relic of the past. But the reality is much different. At any moment, someone in this state can still be fired from their jobs, denied a mortgage, or even refused service at a restaurant because of their gender identity or sexual orientation due to the lack of anti-discrimination protections on the books for LGBTQIA+ Pennsylvanians.

Equal protection under the law is not what Pennsylvania's LGBTQIA+ community deserves. It's what this community should have always had. Every other state in the Northeast has protections on the books! But not Pennsylvania.

On this Valentine's Day, all Pennsylvanians deserve to celebrate their love openly without fear, and it's time for us to give LGBTQIA+ Pennsylvanians the peace of mind that goes along with being protected from discrimination and bigotry.

Thank you for speaking up,

John
