Use the frequently asked questions page to help you prepare a compelling nomination for the 2022-2023 Medal of Valor?the Nation?s highest award for valor by a public safety officer.

Who?s eligible to be nominated?

  • A ?public safety officer? is a person (living or deceased) who is serving or has served in a public agency, with or without compensation, as a firefighter; law enforcement officer, including a corrections, court, or civil defense officer; or emergency services officer, as determined by the U.S. Attorney General.
  • In order to be nominated, public safety officers must have exhibited exceptional courage, extraordinary decisiveness and presence of mind, and unusual swiftness of action, regardless of their own personal safety, in an attempt to save or protect human life. Their actions must be considered to be above and beyond the call of duty.

Each nomination must be submitted through the online nomination system
