Jack, I know we send a lot of fundraising emails. That's because over the past year or so, grassroots donations of just a few dollars have become Daily Kos' largest source of income.
So how do we spend this money?
By far, Daily Kos' largest expense is payroll for our staff of writers, editors, campaign organizers, and administrative support. The next biggest expenses are site hosting and technology development. There are other expenses, like legal (we are being sued by anti-vaxxer and Nazi-cavorter Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.), rent for office space in Oakland, CA, and supplies, but for the most part, Daily Kos is pretty simple: We produce news you can do something about—this involves people and a functioning website.
If we miss our revenue goals, we can't produce the quality of work you have come to expect from us. Unfortunately, two of our sources of revenue, advertising and list building, have fallen behind our projections. This means that we are relying more and more on the generosity of our readers and activists to make ends meet.
This month we raised our fundraising goal by $100,000 in hopes of making up lost revenue. We still need to raise $31,077 to hit this goal. Can you help us out by making a donation of $5?

Amanda McKay, Daily Kos
