Need another reason to be disappointed in or infuriated with Senator Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona?
Sinema recently proposed a surprise amendment to the Federal Aviation Act, which must be renewed later this summer.
Sinema’s proposal would allow airlines to substitute time spent in flight simulators for actual flight time in pilot training.
Here’s the background:
- In 2009, a plane crashed near Buffalo, New York. The crash left 50 people dead.
- The next year, Congress passed sweeping aviation safety reforms, which included increasing the number of in-flight hours of training for commercial pilots to 1,500 hours.
- There has not been a multiple-casualty crash involving a domestic airline since, making this “the safest period in air travel in history” as noted by the leading airline pilots union.
- But some airlines have never stopped fighting the rule — even though it has made flying safer and is supported by the pilot and flight attendant unions.
It will probably come as no surprise to learn that Sinema has taken $150,000 in campaign contributions from the airline industry in recent years.
Let Senator Kyrsten Sinema know what you think:
Are you seriously proposing to weaken training requirements for commercial pilots after taking $150,000 in campaign money from the airline industry? Stop it. Just stop it.
