In the 1980s, Farm Sanctuary President and Co-founder Gene Baur sold meatless hot dogs out of a VW van at Grateful Dead concerts. Why? To spread awareness about the cruelty of animal agriculture.
At this time, Gene was actively on the road documenting the reality of factory farming. You may spot some of his photos in the throwback above — see the boards leaning against the table.
A little while later, in the mid-80s, he would find a “discarded” sheep at a Pennsylvania stockyard who was still clinging to life.
That sheep, later named Hilda, would lead him to found the United States’s first farm sanctuary in 1986 so she — and thousands of future rescued residents — could experience a life free from harm.
