Hi, A leading group of House Republicans just released their proposed budget for 2024, and it’s truly appalling. The Republican Study Committee plan would slash Social Security by raising the retirement age and cutting middle class benefits. It would lay waste to Medicare, replacing guaranteed care with a measly coupon for insurance premiums.1 It would even cut funding for school lunches for low-income kids.2 This disastrous budget, endorsed by nearly three-quarters of House Republicans, must never become law. Demand Progress has already mobilized over one hunred thousand people to contact Congress to demand protections for Social Security and Medicare, and now we must reedouble our efforts. We're counting on grassroots supporters like you to help make it possible.
The problem doesn't stop in the House. Republicans in the Senate have been hellbent on dismantling Social Security and Medicare for years. Florida Senator Rick Scott has called for Social Security to automatically disappear within five years along with all federal programs unless Congress votes to extend it. Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson wants to make Social Security “discretionary,” so Congress would have to vote on whether to fund the program every year. Senator Rand Paul wants to privatize it.3 And while these same right-wing lawmakers squawk about how Social Security will (someday) run out of money, they dismiss out of hand a simple, equitable solution: Removing the cap that billionaires and millionaires pay in Social Security taxes.4 The newly released, draconian House budget is no idle threat. The recent fight over the debt ceiling shows that the extreme MAGA Republicans are willing to shut down the government if they don’t get their way. Sixty-six million Americans depend on Social Security every day. That’s why we can’t let the House Republican budget get anywhere close to becoming law.
