A woman today is 50 percent more likely than her own mother to die in pregnancy or childbirth, and the risk is much higher for Black women. Here in New York, Black women are nine times more likely to die within a year of giving birth than white women. In May, through the Clinton Global Initiative, we convened a working group of birth equity leaders from the New York City Department of Health and mental Hygiene and 75 cross-sector partners to develop a road map towards increasing birth equity, including expanding maternal health programs and improving the integration of reproductive health care into primary care. Our hope is that this will not only improve maternal health outcomes in New York City but that it will serve as a model for what’s possible across the U.S.
The goal across all our programs at the Clinton Foundation is to drive action through the power of partnerships. And our strength is forging these partnerships across the public, private, and nonprofit sectors to work together and address some of the most urgent challenges of today. At a time when there’s much to be concerned (and angry) about, I find a lot of hope in what can be done when people come together as a force for good.
