Great news on our Moore v. Harper case, John – your support and action has helped us fend off the far-right’s most extreme Supreme Court power grab yet!
This is an ENORMOUS win for voting rights. But you and I both know the enemies of democracy aren't giving up. That's why I’m writing today to ask if you’ll join this movement to defend every voter’s rights: in the courts, in state legislatures, and at polling places across the country.
Last December, Common Cause rallied outside the Supreme Court – while our lawyers inside showed how North Carolina Republicans’ fringe “lawless lawmakers” theory – the idea that they deserved unlimited power to manipulate our elections – was absurd and dangerous.
Representing Common Cause, Neal Katyal and the lawyers of Hogan Lovells and Southern Coalition for Social Justice laid out a clear case for why the U.S. Constitution, history, and precedent are all on our side: no one branch of government is above the law.
And just today, the Court served an extraordinary defeat to the power-hungry politicians who tried to stay in power by manipulating voting maps and taking away our rights.
But, John, this all-out assault on our democracy is only escalating. And, reckless legal maneuvers like this one to seize power at all costs will likely come back to this same Supreme Court again and again – until we shut it down for good.
Those attacks are mounting. Lawless state legislatures expelling their colleagues for dissenting. Extreme anti-voter legislation that strips Americans of their right to vote. And a dangerous, authoritarian movement that believes anybody who doesn’t agree with them must be silenced.
Common Cause is our best defense against these threats – and, John, today proves that we get results. That’s why even though the 2024 election is more than a year away, our work to ensure it’s free, fair, and inclusive is well underway.
Make no mistake: we may have stopped these power-hungry politicians today, but they know their only path to victory is to lock in oligarchy at the expense of democracy.
That chaos can come in the form of Supreme Court rulings like Citizens United and Shelby County that upended centuries of precedent and decades of progress. We simply can’t rest on our laurels and take for granted that the Supreme Court will stop the next power grab.
The Court has now decisively rejected the “Lawless Lawmaker Theory” these politicians used to justify their power grab – but they'll be back. That's why the only long-term solution is to pass the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, the Freedom to Vote Act, and other pro-democracy federal laws.
And while we work to make that happen, we must hold firm in state legislatures – and mobilize our largest Protect The Vote effort yet with more volunteers in the field than ever before – between now and next November to keep our elections fair.
