A New Deal for Youth Changemakers hosted an in-person member and staff interactive Capitol Hill briefing on how to put youth in power on June 21.
The briefing was hosted by A New Deal for Youth in coordination with the office of Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) and the Future Forum caucus.
On June 21, we:
- Had Rep. Chuy Garcia (D-IL) open the Hill Briefing and speak about the Connecting Youth to Jobs Act
- Heard directly from young people on what it means to be youth-led (versus youth-centered), how to share decision-making power with young people, and how to sustain engagement with young people
- Heard from Rep. Bowman (D-NY) about the importance of youth-led initiatives, including his district's first annual youth leadership conference, held on June 3
- Taught participants how to score a bill with ND4Y's criteria
- Hosted a ND4Y press briefing where Rep. Summer Lee (D-PA), Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY), and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) spoke about the power and passion of young people
As Changemaker Fabian Sanchez Mondejar said, "How I see youth-led is a bunch of youth coming together for social change and other kinds of changes that they see in the world that are wrong. For example, I hosted a march back last month [with] my university, Washington State University, for murdered and missing Indigenous women and peoples (MMIW) and this was youth-led with my organization that I'm a part of. That's how I see youth-led - we don't wait for anyone, we go for it."

Next Steps:
During the press briefing, Rep. Bowman encouraged young people to create the legislation they want to see and bring it to Congress. In fact, he said, “I am committed not only to uplifting and engaging the voices and leadership capabilities of the youth, but also following the youth as they reimagine, design, and write legislation to build a new country that works for all people.”
ND4Y Changemakers are answering that call and will work on drafting legislation and take it directly to members of Congress!
The New Deal for Youth Policy Platform advances radical and interconnected policy ideas that transform current systems, while also centering racial, gender, and social justice. Our policies seek to redefine whose expertise, experiences, and systems of knowledge are valued, understanding that young people not only deserve a seat at the decision-making table, but can also shake the table and create the menu. We believe in actively combatting classist and racist systems, championing models that empower communities, and amplifying the voices of young people as decision-makers in the future of our greater society.
