We evaluated all state assembly members and senators on nearly 200 bills.

ACLU Supporter –

Last year, with your advocacy and engagement, we advanced ambitious reforms that will make positive change for all Californians.

These include landmark legislation to reduce police shootings and increase accountability for police officers; expand abortion access on public university campuses; make it easier for people to vote on election day; ensure that people in jail can access needed healthcare; and make the jury selection system more fair.

These victories required leaders in the state legislature who partnered with the ACLU in California and defied pressure by special interest groups to protect and advance our civil liberties.

THANK YOUR CIVIL LIBERTIES CHAMPIONS <[link removed]>

We evaluated all state assembly members and senators on nearly 200 bills that the ACLU in California sponsored, supported, or opposed in 2019. Nine legislators stood out with perfect scores on civil liberties issues. These are your Civil Liberties Champions:

* State Senator Steven Bradford — Gardena (SD35)
* State Senator Holly Mitchell — Los Angeles (SD30)
* State Senator Nancy Skinner — Berkeley (SD9)
* State Senator Scott Wiener — San Francisco (SD11)
* Assembly Member Ash Kalra — San Jose (AD27)
* Assembly Member Sydney Kamlager — Los Angeles (AD54)
* Assembly Member Mark Stone — Monterey Bay (AD29)
* Assembly Member Shirley Weber — San Diego (AD79)
* Assembly Member Buffy Wicks — Oakland (AD15)

These legislators distinguished themselves as champions by authoring or co-authoring our sponsored bills in 2019 and by voting with us on all of our sponsored and supported bills. They also stood with us on the most controversial bills and the bills we opposed.

Take a moment to thank your Civil Liberties Champions. <[link removed]>

As we begin another round of legislative battles this year, this scorecard reminds us that there are wide differences among our legislators. It recognizes those who have demonstrated the courage of their convictions by fighting for your rights and the rights of all Californians.

Together, we will continue to fight until everyone is able to live with equal dignity and respect.

With gratitude,

Abdi Soltani
Executive Director, ACLU of Northern California
