We couldn’t let Pride month end without lifting up these three trailblazing Emerge alums! Take a quick moment to meet them: 

Delegate Danica Roem is an Emerge Virginia alum and Executive Director working to build our pipeline of bold Democratic women to transform politics at every level. Roem made history in 2017 when she won her election to the Virginia House of Delegates – defeating a self-proclaimed “chief homophobe” – to become the first out-and-seated trans person in a U.S. state legislature. This year, she’s continuing her fight for green cities, affordable health care, and more by running for the Virginia State Senate!

Rep. Keturah Herron won their special election in 2022 to become the first out LGBTQ+ person to serve in the Kentucky State House. As a former policy strategist for the ACLU, Herron worked to achieve crucial legislation like Breonna’s Law, which bans no-knock warrants in the city of Louisville. They continue to fight for voting rights, violence prevention, and fair wages for all Kentuckians. 

Janessa Goldbeck is running for San Diego County Supervisor right now! After fighting for gender equality in military leadership, Goldbeck left her career as a Marine to care for her mother, who suffered from Alzheimer’s disease. She has since gone on to advocate for unpaid caregivers and champion essential services for vulnerable community members. If elected, Goldbeck will be the FIRST woman to represent her district and hold this office. 

John, we know we can count on our Emerge alums to put in the work for our communities – because they’re a part of the communities they serve.
