Dear Friend,
As your Member of Congress, one of my duties is to help you navigate the process of obtaining or renewing a passport. Due to the current historic volume of applicants, routine passport processing can take up to 13 weeks and expedited processing up to nine weeks. With that in mind, I want to provide some passport tips to make your travels as seamless as possible:
- Check your passport expiration date. If it is expired, or will expire within one year, apply for renewal whether you have travel planned or not.
- Make sure your passport won’t expire for at least six months before making irreversible travel plans. Many countries require at least six months of validity on your passport for permission to enter. As a result, your airline can deny boarding if your passport will expire within six months of departure.
- Use the Form Filler tool on the travel.state.gov website to submit an application. This will ensure you submit the correct forms without errors that may cause delays.
- Check your application status online at passportstatus.state.gov and sign up for email updates. If you applied online, log into MyTravelGov to check the status of your application.
- Passport processing times do not include mailing time, and are not guaranteed. Even expedited service is subject to delays.
In some cases, my office can assist in securing an expedited passport, including:
- Life or death situations, meaning you need to travel internationally within three business days because an immediate family member has passed away, is in hospice care, or has a life-threatening illness or injury. Proof of this emergency is required for my office to intervene.
- For travel planned within 14 days. It is recommended that you upgrade to expedited processing at this point. Proof of travel is required for my office to intervene.
While my office will do our best to help you obtain your passport in time for your travels, expedited approval is not guaranteed. You may also contact the National Passport Center for assistance at (877) 487-2778.
If you have any further questions about the passport process, please do not hesitate to contact my district office at (630) 585-7672, or visit my website at foster.house.gov.
Sincerely,
Bill Foster Member of Congress
