[1]NNU - Medicare for All!

Nurses know
that we must advocate for the health care LGBTQIA+ patients need, from
gender-affirming care to HIV/AIDS treatment. But once again, we find
ourselves up against Big Pharma's greed.

Take Truvada — one of the main drugs used to prevent and treat HIV
infection — for example:

* Truvada’s development was "almost fully funded" by U.S. taxpayers.^1
Yet, it is the pharmaceutical company, Gilead, that is bringing in
massive profits as a result.
* Since 2017, Gilead has collected $10 billion in revenue from selling
its drugs for PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) — namely Truvada.^2
* PrEP, taken daily as a pill, reduces the risk of HIV infection by 99%,
but its price keeps it out of reach for many.
* Without insurance, Gilead charges from $1,600 to $2,000 for a month's
supply of Truvada — but it can be manufactured for a fraction of the
cost.

This Pride Month, we're saying loud and proud: Our broken health care
system should not keep anyone from getting the care they need — especially
when it comes to critical drugs like Truvada.

While we fight to ensure affordable access to HIV/AIDS prevention and
treatment, we also have a vision of a future with true health care
justice: a health care system in which every person — regardless of age,
race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, and more —
can get the health care they need when they need it. That’s why we fight
for Medicare for All.

Under a Medicare for All system, the government would have the ability to
negotiate for much lower prices on life-saving drugs like Truvada. But if
we want to win Medicare for All, we must take our fight directly to the
pharmaceutical corporations that are standing in the way. That’s where our
Patients Over Profits campaign comes in.

As part of this campaign, we're calling on our elected officials and
candidates to reject contributions of over $200 from executives,
lobbyists, and PACs affiliated with the hospital, insurance, and pharma
industries. We know transforming our political system is key to
transforming our health care system.
