Dear Neighbor,

Those who know me know my heart is in baseball. And they know that the Congressional Baseball Game is one of my favorite events of the year.

The Congressional Baseball Game is an annual bipartisan event where Democrats and Republicans go head-to-head in a baseball game at Nationals Park to compete for bragging rights on the Hill. Folks from all around D.C. come to watch, and all the money raised goes to charities in the Washington area.

I have been proud to play in the Congressional Baseball Game since 2003. And this year, I was honored to serve as the first woman coach in the 113-year tradition of the Congressional Baseball Game!

Coaching the game this year was a surreal experience. The event allows us to put aside politics for a night, build friendships with people on the other side of the aisle, and just enjoy a game under the lights. No politics, just baseball.

And as the first woman coach in the history of the game, I am hopeful that my being out there will show young women and girls everywhere that everything boys can do, we can do, too!

I am also proud that this year we raised nearly 2 million dollars for local charities! I’ve always said that the real winners in this game are the communities we raise money for – including the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Washington, the Washington Literacy Center, the Washington Nationals Philanthropies, and the United States Capitol Police Memorial Fund.

I am a lifelong Dodgers fan, and I grew up playing organized fast-pitched softball and casual baseball with my four brothers. I love the game and it is a love I am proud to have passed on to my son, Joaquin.

I want to thank everyone who came out to support the game this year. I can’t wait to see you all back on the diamond next year!

Hope to see you soon,
