Today's newsletter highlights an article from Alice Chen and colleagues
on the competition created by biosimilars in the biologic drug market.

Biosimilars Drive Competition

In their recently published Datawatch, Alice Chen and coauthors compare
prices and market share dominance of the cancer drug trastuzumab
(Herceptin) and five of its biosimilars since 2019
<[link removed]>.

Using Medicare claims data, they find that between the first quarter of
2019 and the second quarter of 2022, Herceptin's average sales price
fell 21 percent.

Also, "By the end of the second quarter of 2022, the biosimilars'
average sales prices ranged from 28 percent to 58 percent of the
originator's average sales price in the first quarter of 2019." This
finding suggests that biosimilars are effectively making biologic
markets more competitive.

Herceptin also lost market share following the introduction of
biosimilars.

impact of biosimilars on biologic markets.

Elsewhere at Health Affairs

Read Health Affairs' new Forefront series, Private Sector Solutions
for Health Equity
<[link removed]>,
featuring health equity experts as they examine private-sector
initiatives and responsibility to advance health equity. The series
includes articles exploring private-sector efforts to challenge
injustices in health care. Topics covered include cardiovascular health,
mental health, and maternal health.

In the first article in the series, author Lisa A. Cooper argues that by
expanding their view and thinking regionally, even globally,
private-sector companies can significantly improve the lives of people
in the communities

in which they do business.

We are grateful to CVS Health <[link removed]> for
supporting this series.

Also today in Health Affairs Forefront, Annapoorna Prakash and
colleagues discuss building a global framework for telehealth

Elevating Voices

During June, we're highlighting influential voices and organizations who
have made an impact on LGBTQ+ health equity and policy.

In a June 2023 article, Andrew Bolibol and coauthors examine trends in
health insurance coverage and access to care for LGBT and non-LGBT
adults following the implementation of the ACA and the
<[link removed]>Obergefell
<[link removed]>ruling
<[link removed]>.
Despite changes in insurance coverage, they note that LGBT adults face
persistent disparities in access to care, and that LGBT people were
still more likely than their non-LGBT peers to forgo care due to cost.

Bolibol also joined us on the A Health Podyssey
<[link removed]>podcast
to discuss the article
