Dear Friend,
Last Thursday, the House Ways and Means Committee met in a closed-door executive session to review claims made by multiple Internal Revenue Service (IRS) whistleblowers about the handling of an investigation into Hunter Biden’s tax obligations. Prior to the conclusion of the meeting, the Committee voted to release the whistleblower’s testimony because it’s important for the American people to know that when it comes to criminal enforcement under the Biden Administration, there is clearly a double-standard.
The two IRS agents we heard from worked directly on the tax evasion case of Hunter Biden, and offered extremely concerning information about misconduct and government abuse. Their testimony outlined wrongdoing at the IRS, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the Department of Justice (DOJ) in the investigation of Hunter. The whistleblowers pointed out that Hunter Biden didn't report all of his income to the IRS for many years – and broke multiple laws in the process. Money came flowing in from all over the world – including from Ukraine, China, and Romania – and much of that money went unreported. Any ordinary American caught in a duplicitous scheme to avoid paying their taxes would have faced severe consequences – but not Hunter.
Following Joe Biden being sworn in as President, there were concerns that the DOJ wouldn't be an impartial investigator in this case. Attorney General Merrick Garland ignored those concerns and refused to appoint a special prosecutor to the case. Instead, AG Garland promised the American people in public testimony the prosecutor handling Hunter Biden's case – U.S. Attorney for Delaware David Weiss – could bring charges against Hunter outside of Delaware. For almost a year, IRS investigators and Weiss tried to advance the investigation, including bringing charges against Hunter Biden, but every time they were denied.
The whistleblower allegations point to a steady campaign of unequal treatment in enforcing tax law and interference in the form of delays, divulgences, and denials into the investigation of tax crimes that may have been committed by the President’s son. They also outlined how the IRS retaliated against them. The whistleblowers are investigative special agents with no record of partisanship and no past whistleblower activity. They were blocked by the DOJ when trying to conduct standard interviews, and then were removed from the case after complaining about not being able to do their jobs.
They both recommended multiple felony charges against Hunter Biden but after a five-year investigation, last week the DOJ decided to settle on misdemeanor charges which amount to a slap on the wrist. Even some of my Democratic colleagues in Congress admit the President's son received preferential treatment for evading his taxes. Rest assured, House Republicans are committed to finding the facts and bringing this misconduct to light.
