Dear Friend,
This weekend, the world’s attention turned to the drama of a mercenary army called the Wagner Group seemingly challenging Vladimir Putin’s iron grip over Russia. But who and what is this Wagner Group?
Today, The Sentry released a major, multi-year investigative report, “ Architects of Terror: The Wagner Group’s Blueprint for State Capture in the Central African Republic [[link removed]] ,” documenting Wagner’s central role in Russian global expansionist strategy. Using corruption and terror, Wagner has been testing its tactics of ultraviolent domination and natural resource plundering in the Central African Republic, where it has gained significant control over the country's economy and its political and military leadership. In turn, Wagner has been able to increase its profits and its ability to fund wars and expand criminal business operations around the world. [link removed] [[link removed]]
No one can predict what will happen tomorrow or in a few months in this brutal saga. But what we have learned from investigating Wagner in Africa is that this is a monster—resilient, fearless, utterly predatory, and causing death and despair everywhere it goes.
Urgent action must be taken. Failure to address this developing threat would result in a world dominated by even more terror, atrocity, and exploitation, with the possibility of an increasing number of private military groups using the same business model.
