Summer: A Hungry Time for Children Near You

For many students who depend on free school
meals, the end of the school year can be scary. Many of Vanessa
Ibara's 3rd grade students have shared their fear of summer
hunger with her. And It's broken her heart to not be able to
help them, until now. Students in San Antonio, where Vanessa teaches,
now benefit from a partnership with No Kid Hungry which provides a
summer meals program that "ensures students aren't
hungry." Thanks to donors like you, programs like these exist in
more and more communities around the country.

A Historic Victory for Kids this Summer

Feeding kids in the summer in rural
communities can be hard. With sparse food distribution locations and
geographically spread out families, many children haven't been
able to take advantage of summer meal programs. Luckily, Congress
recently passed a bill that allows for "non-congregate"
summer meal distribution options, meaning that meals can now be
distributed in a way that allows children to eat at home. Thanks to
your hard work and support, No Kid Hungry was not only able to raise
awareness about this important bill, but also provide districts like
Carolina County with buses and coolers to help them get creative with
their distribution. Learn more about this cool program.

Kids Do Love Spaghetti Squash!

The cafeterias in the Smithville Independent
School District elementary schools do much more than serve food they
teach students about nutrition, and even have them help with the
cooking! When No Kid Hungry visited this spring, parents were thrilled
at the way partnerships (like the one with No Kid Hungry) helped their
children get excited about healthy foods. Not every kid hates
vegetables and with your help, Smithville has made eating nutritious
foods exciting, new, and fun for their students.
