Dear John,
Please accept this invitation to join our June 29, 2023, webinar on critical new legislation that has great potential to help—or harm—animals.
Congress is now ramping up for its once-every-five-years legislative ritual to formulate a new Farm Bill. That means NOW is the time for animal advocates to focus on adding key animal protection reforms to this must-pass legislation.
Our webinar will share with you the key provisions we are trying to include, what they will accomplish, and how you can help make a difference for animals. You will hear directly from the expert panel we have assembled to support our goals for the Farm Bill and be able to ask them your questions.
It takes place June 29, 2023, at 8 p.m. ET/ 5 p.m. PT, and is free, thanks to the generous sponsor of this Claudia Miller Ignite Series on Animal Welfare.
The stakes could not be higher.
- Animal fighting. The FIGHT Act is a major rewrite and improvement of the federal law against dogfighting and cockfighting, and our proposal is so strong that the cockfighting lobby is mobilizing nationally to defeat it. This Act will enable more robust enforcement actions to put animal-fighters behind bars.
- Horse slaughter. The pipeline to Canada and Mexico is carrying fewer horses than ever to slaughter, but it still claims too many lives — 20,000 horses and other equines a year. We want to make sure the Farm Bill makes it illegal to export live horses to slaughterhouses in Canada and Mexico.
- Greyhound racing. The time has come to close out the era of greyhound racing in the United States and to prevent foreign tracks from buying American racing dogs or to simulcast their signals of greyhound racing in our massive market
- Stopping the EATS Act. In May, the U.S. Supreme Court affirmed as constitutional California's law banning the sale of pork that comes from factory farmers that confine the sows so intensively that they cannot even turn around. That means the National Pork Producers Council and other Big Ag interests will now appeal to their allies in Congress to nullify that state law and perhaps hundreds of other animal welfare, food safety, and conservation and environmental policies that touch agricultural commerce. Their overreaching, dangerous legislative creation is called the “Exposing Agriculture Trade Suppression (EATS) Act.” We must defeat the EATS Act, denying Big Pork and other agribusiness interests the opportunity to wipe out Prop 12 and other critical state animal welfare laws.
