According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 600,000 lives were tragically lost to malaria in 2021 alone*.

It is devastating to know that this disease, which is entirely preventable, continues to claim so many lives. We cannot stand idly by while essential medicines and measures are denied to some of the most marginalised communities.

At Health Poverty Action, we firmly believe in working alongside those who are excluded to access the critical resources to fight malaria.

In Cambodia, this means supporting and equipping healthcare workers to reach people living in remote settlements, often hundreds of miles away from medical clinics. Together, we are setting up facilities to provide essential medicines and conduct crucial tests within these communities.

One essential component in preventing the spread of malaria is affordable mosquito repellent. Sadly, in many cases, profit is prioritised over people's lives, leaving those with low incomes unable to pay for this crucial product. We refuse to accept this injustice.

In Cambodia, having consulted health workers, community leaders, activists and experts, we established a not-for-profit social enterprise to produce affordable "Holy Fire" mosquito repellent.

Through this sustainable model, people benefit from access to mosquito repellent in the long-term, helping to prevent the spread of malaria in the region.

Unaffordable and inaccessible medical and preventative care is not inevitable. Together, we can address inequality and build healthier communities.
