In case you missed last night’s call, here’s the deal: Texas is the next battleground for the Green New Deal, and we have just over two weeks to knock on the doors and make the phone calls we need to elect Jessica Cisneros and unseat Henry Cuellar, “Big Oil’s Favorite Democrat.”

Our Sunrise-endorsed candidates Jessica Cisneros, Mike Siegel, and Heidi Sloan are building the movement for a Green New Deal in Texas, but they need people power to beat their corporate-backed candidates on March 3rd.

As Austin hub member Kelsey Vizzard described: “Texas towns are being destroyed by pipelines and coal plants and climate change in general, and it is the average Texan who is bearing the burden of the fossil fuel industry. So Texans are feeling climate change heavily, and are ready to talk about it.”

Last night on our call with Jessica Cisneros, Mike Siegel, and representatives from the Rio Grande Valley and Austin hubs, it became unmistakingly clear how crucial winning the fight for the Green New Deal in Texas is for our movement.

In the words of Margarita Gonzales from the Rio Grande Valley hub, “We have always had despairingly low voter-turnout, but we can’t blame our people when our politicians have sold us out time and time again. But now, with young people rising up to demand better, we still have a chance to prevent the worst.

“Phonebanking is the most effective way of reaching our community. Specifically, we really need Spanish speakers to sign up to phonebank. We know that Sunrise all across the country has our backs.”

Our Austin, Rio Grande Valley, Houston and Woodlands hubs are doing what they can to elect the candidates who will usher in our vision of the Green New Deal, and they’re asking you to do the same. Can you support them by signing up to host a phone bank in your community by March 3rd?

Like Margarita said, it’s time we “stop despairing and start demanding.” If we can get enough people making phone calls and knocking doors in these districts, we can win the down the ballot races we need to win our vision of the Green New Deal.
