New guidance: Research concerns | Data

Welcome to COPE Digest

COPE and FORCE11 formed the Research Data Publishing Ethics Working Group in January 2021 to lead the development of standards for research data in publications. In September of that year the Working Group, in collaboration with COPE, developed recommendations for the handling of ethical concerns related to the publication of research data ([link removed](DATA-FLOWCHARTS-JUNE-2023-DIGEST-NM)) for four categories of data issues. This was followed by the development of policy templates ([link removed](DATA-FLOWCHARTS-JUNE-2023-DIGEST-NM)) to help journals, publishers, and data repositories communicate their policies around data publication.

We are now delighted to announce the launch of a series of practical flowcharts for journals and data repositories who are dealing with ethical concerns relating to data publication. Each of the four categories outlined in the 2021 recommendations has accompanying flowcharts for issues that occur before and after publication:
* Authorship and contributorship of published data: dealing with concerns ([link removed](DATA-FLOWCHARTS-JUNE-2023-DIGEST-NM))
* Authorship and contributorship of unpublished data: dealing with concerns ([link removed](DATA-FLOWCHARTS-JUNE-2023-DIGEST-NM))
* Concerns about risk in published data ([link removed](DATA-FLOWCHARTS-JUNE-2023-DIGEST-NM))
* Concerns about risk in unpublished data ([link removed](DATA-FLOWCHARTS-JUNE-2023-DIGEST-NM))
* Scientific rigour of published data: dealing with concerns ([link removed](DATA-FLOWCHARTS-JUNE-2023-DIGEST-NM))
* Scientific rigour of unpublished data: dealing with concerns ([link removed](DATA-FLOWCHARTS-JUNE-2023-DIGEST-NM))
* Legal and regulatory restrictions of published data: dealing with concerns ([link removed](DATA-FLOWCHARTS-JUNE-2023-DIGEST-NM))
* Legal and regulatory restrictions of unpublished data: dealing with concerns ([link removed](DATA-FLOWCHARTS-JUNE-2023-DIGEST-NM))

The Working Group is now closing and we thank everyone involved for their work and commitment in developing these valuable resources.

Find out more on the FORCE11 blog ([link removed](DATA-FLOWCHARTS-JUNE-2023-DIGEST-NM)) about the Working Group activities and opportunities to submit suggestions for further work in this area.

NEW GUIDANCE

Dealing with concerns about the integrity of published research

In recent years, reporting of ethical concerns about research publications has become more prevalent, and the issues identified have become more complex. This includes situations where multiple concerns are raised simultaneously to multiple journals, from anonymous or named individuals.
This discussion document presents practical considerations for managing scenarios where editors are contacted with ethical concerns about the integrity of published research, highlighting:
* How concerns are reported to editors and publishers.
* How concerns should be responded to.
* Dealing with multiple concerns to the same journal from one individual.
* Dealing with issues raised across multiple journals.
