Dear MoveOn member,
Across the country, Starbucks workers like me are on STRIKE because managers have been tearing down Pride flags in Starbucks stores—and that’s just their latest attack on LGBTQIA+ workers.1
Starbucks managers have threatened workers that unionizing could jeopardize our access to existing benefits.2 It was an attempt to scare us out of organizing—but we're not backing down.
So, just this weekend, 21 stores temporarily closed as we went on strike over Starbucks’ hypocritical treatment of LGBTQIA+ workers and their illegal union-busting campaign.
John, Starbucks workers like me need all of the support we can get.
Ever since we began our fight for union rights, Starbucks has been coming down hard on queer, trans, and nonbinary workers. That’s included:
• Firing queer and trans worker-leaders unionizing for better wages, benefits, and workplaces.3
• Threatening to take away available benefits for workers, including queer and trans workers.
• Tolerating harassment and abuse of queer workers.4
And yet, Starbucks still has the guts to claim that they support trans and queer workers. If Starbucks really wanted to support us, they would listen to us, listen to our concerns, and meet us at the bargaining table in good faith.
Starbucks’ hypocrisy hits especially hard during Pride Month. So many of us came to work here because of their stated progressive values. But it’s clear to queer baristas like me that Starbucks doesn’t care about LGBTQIA+ workers—or any of its workers for that matter.
We won’t tolerate Starbucks’ anti-worker bullying—not during Pride Month or any other month.
In solidarity,
–Neha Cremin, Starbucks Worker from Oklahoma City, OK, from Starbucks Workers United
