Thousands of Starbucks baristas at more than 150 stores across the U.S. are striking this week, John.
The strike comes weeks after Starbucks refused to sit at the bargaining table over a policy change that saw workers in some states ordered to either remove existing LGBTQ+ Pride flags and symbols, or told they would not be allowed to decorate stores for Pride month.
Now, in what’s to be a week-long strike, workers are fighting to negotiate a contract that protects LGBTQ+ workers and puts an end to Starbucks’ unfair labor practices, illegal union-busting, and more.

The new policy prohibiting workers from decorating stores for Pride month is a stark departure from previous years — back when Pride was considered “profitable” by corporate America, and Starbucks had no problem cashing in, providing Pride pins and apparel for workers to wear.
But with the ongoing right-wing backlash and boycott of major brands like Target and Bud Light over Pride merchandise and promotions, Starbucks has decided to appease anti-LGBTQ+ extremists, and put profits over the workers and communities they claim to care about.
Starbucks has been doing this, though — way before this year’s Pride month.
As part of its anti-union push, Starbucks has intimidated and threatened its baristas — many of whom are queer or trans — for their efforts to unionize.
They’ve made calculated cuts to workers’ hours to block them from accessing benefits, including life-saving gender-affirming care; withheld credit card tipping at select stores; and refused to bargain with union representatives to guarantee workers their rights.
Strikers are saying enough of the performative progressivism, and demanding that Starbucks come to the table to bargain for a contract that legally guarantees their rights.
