It’s no secret that homelessness is on the rise.

If you live in any major city in America, you’ve probably noticed that more people are living on the street than you’re used to.

But the truth is, homelessness isn’t just an urban issue…and it’s not just a matter of visibility.
Independent Institute CEO & Chairman Mary L. G. Theroux conducts an interview in San Francisco for Beyond Homeless: Finding Hope

Homelessness is becoming more visible because it’s rising rapidly in sheer numbers—in California especially. Even well-to-do neighborhoods are seeing the rise of tent cities and crowded, unsanitary conditions.

Our award-winning documentary Beyond Homeless: Finding Hope showcases a timely look at the escalating problem, featuring San Francisco as homelessness’ poster child. It investigates the rising costs correlated with a rising crisis, and showcases an alternative approach that has transformed the homeless problem, Haven for Hope in San Antonio, TX.

This alternative approach places the issue squarely in the hands of the people—not the state.

And it’s working.

We have been hosting screenings of this award-winning film with politically diverse networks across the country. The reception has been humbling, and we think for good reason.

Our new way forward offers hope.

Most recently, Beyond Homeless was screened 3 times at the Phoenix Film Festival, the 21st film festival it has been featured in (winning 6 of them)—and the final screening sold out.

And here at ground zero for homelessness, screenings and panel discussions continue to be hosted by civic groups in both San Francisco and Sacramento across the political spectrum, eager to come together around solutions.

We are working around the clock to become the biggest evangelists of the movement to end street homelessness and create vibrant communities in the process.

Because for us, this issue isn’t some vague abstraction or a political talking point.

This is a movement, for the sake of real people.

But we can’t maintain this movement without your help.

Large and growing numbers of people across the country are increasingly aware that the status quo approach on homelessness isn’t working—primed for our message of hope in community. Won’t you help us reach them?

We thus gratefully appreciate your consideration of a fiscal year-end gift to Independent and to help us take advantage of these tremendous opportunities. Your tax-deductible contribution of $50, $100, $500—or whatever you can give—will help us reach and engage new supporters for a free society!

Thank you for your kind consideration!

With best wishes,
