Angry Putin

With palpable anger, Vladimir Putin of Russia made his first public comments since a paramilitary revolt was called off on Saturday, saying in a five-minute speech that the uprising led by Yevgeny V. Prigozhin — who he did not mention by name — failed because “the entire Russian society united and rallied everyone,” as the NYT reports.

Wagner Protest

Meanwhile, Yevgeny Prigozhin, defended the short-lived insurrection and claimed on Monday he wasn’t trying to oust Putin. As the WSJ reports, the Wagner chief said that his aim wasn’t to overthrow the government but to protest the way the paramilitary group was being treated.

IMF Warns Central Banks

Central banks must accept the “uncomfortable truth” that they may have to tolerate a longer period of inflation above their 2 per cent target in order to avert a financial crisis, the deputy head of the IMF has warned, as the FT reports.

Smiles

There’s no plot spoiler here, but I do want to talk about the incredible soundtrack and about a scene in Episode 2 from Season 2 of Hulu’s “The Bear.” Starring Jeremy Allen White, “The Bear” is one of my favorite shows. Season 2 finds Carmen Berzatto, a brilliant young chef from the fine-dining world forced to return home to run his family sandwich shop, trying to reconfigure the restaurant as something altogether different. What I love about the show is the emotions these actors lay bare as they lean into character. And I have rarely seen a show where the soundtrack brings out such depths of emotion. Series creator Christopher Storer and co-music supervisor Josh Senior have reached another level.

In Season 2, Episode 2, there is a scene between White, who plays Chef Carmen, and the actress Molly Gordon as a medical student who formerly was in a relationship with Carmen. The two meet up by chance in a grocery store after years of no contact. I have long been a fan of White who famously starred in “Shameless” and Gordon who had a notable secondary role in “Animal Kingdom.” If you get a chance to watch these two actors in Season 2, Episode 2 of “The Bear,” you probably won’t soon forget the on-screen conversation between White and Gordon, or, the R.E.M. classic that provided atmosphere for the scene.
