Gov. Pritzker Announces One Appointment to Boards and Commissions
Building on a strong team of diverse experts in their fields, Governor JB Pritzker announced the following appointment in his administration
Illinois State Board of Education
Sherly Chavarria will serve as a Member of the Illinois State Board of Education.* Dr. Sherly Chavarria is a highly experienced leader with over 15 years of experience at various levels of education. She has worked in the community, as well as in classroom, school, and district settings. She currently serves as the Senior Program Officer for Education at the Lloyd A. Fry Foundation. Previously, Dr. Chavarria was Chief of Teaching and Learning at Chicago Public Schools, where she led significant initiatives including the Skyline Curriculum Equity Initiative, a major project to ensure access to high-quality curriculum and instructional resources for all CPS students. Before her work in district leadership, Dr. Chavarria was the principal at William P. Nixon Elementary School where she partnered with families and educators to transition the school into a Dual Language school. Dr. Chavarria is also a former teacher, having taught intermediate grades in Chicago Public Schools. She holds a bachelor's degree in psychology and cultural and social anthropology from Stanford University, a master's degree in teaching from National Louis University, and a doctorate in education from the University of Illinois at Chicago.
