John,
If we want to be a country that leads with compassion, love, and unity — we need to start by removing harmful barriers to benefits for immigrants.
Pramila's Lifting Immigrant Families Through Benefits Access Restoration Act (LIFT the BAR Act) will finally eliminate the arbitrary and cruel five-year waiting period for access to critical resources like Medicaid, the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), and much more.
If you stand with Pramila and believe we must treat immigrants with the respect they deserve, please add your name in support of the LIFT the BAR Act today.

As an immigrant who came to this country alone at 16, Pramila knows the importance of passing this bill to finally eliminate xenophobic, and unreasonable barriers to health care, food assistance, and other life changing benefits. Immigrants and families should not have to wait to access basic, life-saving services.
In 1996, Congress passed restrictive legislation that created an arbitrary five-year waiting period for immigrants with lawful status to access crucial benefits and services. During this time, immigrants are significantly more likely to be uninsured, placing them at higher risk for adverse health and financial consequences.
To put this into numbers, in 2024, non-elderly immigrants will account for an estimated 8 percent of the population. Yet they will have made up nearly 31 percent of the non-elderly uninsured population.
Every year, this arbitrary barrier denies millions of families, especially families of color, the basics that every family should have. All of us, regardless of our immigration status should have this access. If you stand with Pramila and our movement, please add your name to support the LIFT the BAR Act and work to finally end this 25 year reign of injustice towards immigrants.
Together,
Pramila Jayapal HQ
