Dear John,

Hens confined in small wire cages endure unimaginable physical and psychological trauma. Painful foot lesions, bone loss, chronic stress—all that these birds know is agony.

Years ago, Canadian consumers demanded an end to cages for hens. Now the egg industry is responding with slightly larger "enriched" cages that still subject birds to a life of confinement and misery. Since 2018, the percentage of hens trapped in cages in Canada has gone down by only 3%.

It doesn't have to be this way. Bigger cages are not a solution.

Today we launch a public awareness campaign calling on the Canadian egg industry to ban cages. The public demands that hens be given the freedom to walk more than a few steps, comfortably nest, dustbathe, and spread their wings.

Despite a consumer-led global shift away from cages for hens, Canada is falling behind in ending some of the worst suffering for chickens in the egg industry.

Now is our chance to stop enriched cages from becoming the norm in Canada. Together we can eliminate the cruel confinement of hens once and for all.
