FIRST: Alabama Republicans asked the Supreme Court to open the door to unchecked racial vote dilution by dismantling Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act.
THEN: The Court reaffirmed the VRA and affirmed a lower court decision holding that Alabama Republicans engaged in unlawful vote dilution.
NOW: Alabama will have to draw a new, fair map before the next election – and many other states could be required to do the same!
Yahoo News: “Racial gerrymandering in Alabama slapped down by SCOTUS. Could the same happen in SC?”
NPR: “Plaintiffs hope SCOTUS decision in Alabama case bodes well for Arkansas redistricting lawsuits”
Bloomberg Government: “Louisiana, Georgia, Texas are among the next states to watch”
Ahead of last November’s elections, our grassroots movement helped secure the fairest congressional maps in a generation. Now, we have the opportunity to advocate for maps that are even fairer before 2024.
We know Republicans will be fighting tooth and nail to keep their manipulated maps in place – and that means the NDRC’s work has never been more important. Will you make a donation of any amount before the end-of-quarter deadline to help us continue fighting for fairness?
