This year’s We Are The Majority Rally marks the progression of young leaders in prevention: We Believe. We Persist. We Prevent. This theme represents how a young person moves from believing in the value of a healthy lifestyle to persisting in the face of adversity to preventing substance misuse among their peers. "I persist in living a drug-free life by spending time with peers and family members who are also committed to living and supporting others in healthy lives." —Lipika Narisetti, Ohio Youth-Led Prevention Network Youth Council Even when a young person believes in the value of prevention and healthy living, they are inevitably faced with challenges—daily stressors, trauma, peer pressure, and more—that can tempt them to use drugs or alcohol. Persistence, then, is the second phase of youth-led prevention. It involves finding healthy coping mechanisms and building refusal skills so that they can resist the temptation to use drugs or alcohol. That’s why we’re celebrating the persistence of those young people who find the resolve to stay resilient at this year’s We Are The Majority Rally. This event is hosted every year by the Ohio Youth-Led Prevention Network at Prevention Action Alliance with funding from the Ohio Department of Mental Health & Addiction Services. We’ll challenge negative stereotypes of young people and raise awareness around the fact that the majority of youth choose not to use drugs and alcohol. First, figure out how many young people and how many adults you’ll be bringing to the We Are The Majority Rally, what shirt sizes they’ll need, and how you’ll be traveling (bus, van, or car). Then, add those two numbers together and click on the green “Register” at preventionactionalliance.org/watm. Select the sum of your two numbers from your ticket option, and click the orange “Register” button. Then, you’ll need to fill out the form on the next page, paying special attention to the shirt sizes you’ll need and how many of each size you’ll need (make sure these numbers conform to the numbers you gathered earlier—see the image below). Make sure you include the contact information of the person who will be responsible for your group on May 5. Survey Says: Beer Ads Appeal to Youth The Big Bowl Vote determined that Bud Light's Super Bowl ad was the favorite ad of young people who watched the Super Bowl. By comparison, it ranked only 15th in USA TODAY’s Ad Meter, which ranks Super Bowl ads by consumer rating. Our executive director, Marcie Seidel, said the bottom line was the the ad appealed more to youth than it did to people who can legally purchase it. "That's unacceptable," she said. "These companies use adults with face tattoos throwing temper tantrums, cartoonish characters like Bud Knight, and animals—dogs, horses and kangaroos—to appeal to youth and sell beer to them now and establish themselves as youths’ beer of choice." Read the Press Release Teach Media Literacy with Decoded: Outsmarting Marketing in the Digital Age Whether it is ads for alcohol during the Super Bowl, marijuana on social media, or cigarettes in gas stations, young people are surrounded with advertisements for addictive products harmful to them. This media literacy guide aids coalition staff, teachers, parents, and other individuals who work with and care for young people. It helps them teach young people to critically analyze ads for alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. We can reduce the influence advertisers have on young people and prevent underage drug use. Decoded: Outsmarting Marketing in the Digital Age is a media literacy guide developed by Prevention Action Alliance to educate and advise coalition staff, teachers, parents, and other individuals who work with youth on how to teach them about the reality of targeted marketing. The guide focuses on the marketing efforts of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug companies, and it teaches how to prepare young people to be aware of the influence of advertisements and to critically consume them. Decoded will equip you with valuable information, tips for teaching media literacy, and methods for starting conversations about the effects of advertisements. This booklet is a great resource for schools, parent groups, youth group coordinators, coaches, and many others. You can partner with local coalitions or education boards to help disseminate this critical message. Youth can be taught to guard against persuasive marketing and learn skills that prepare them for a world filled with persuasive media. This booklet can be customized to your organization. You can co-brand it and then share it with schools or other organizations in your community. These trainings will take place in Dayton, Akron, and Bowling Green, and there is no cost to register. Each attendee will receive six total hours of continuing education, three of which will be prevention ethics. As gambling continues to expand throughout Ohio professionals are often unaware of the impact it has, or the resources available. This training will provide an overview of gambling, the connection between gambling and substance use, gaming-to-gambling, and and an examination of current and emerging trends. OUCH! That Stereotype Hurts: Cultural Competency Training This workshop, based on the book by Leslie C. Aguilar, focuses on the importance of cultural competence. It demonstrates how one person speaking up can inspire others to do the same. Participants will learn six specific techniques on how to deal with awkward and damaging situations around the use of stereotypical and biased communication and how to become more culturally competent. This workshop offers participants the understanding and skills needed to deal with our increasingly diverse world by promoting communication skills that promote inclusion and respect.
