Hi Friends,

I hope everyone is staying cool and hydrated during the record high temperatures we’ve been experiencing. If you or someone you know is in need of a cooling center, you can find a list of nearby shelter locations by visiting the Local Seasonal Relief Centers website here, by calling 2-1-1, or utilizing FEMA’s Shelter Texting Feature by texting SHELTER + your ZIP code to 43362 (4FEMA) (example: shelter 12345).

Sincerely,

My Letter to USPS Demanding South Texas Be a Top Priority For New Trucks

On Tuesday, June 20, I joined my South Texas colleagues in sending a letter to United States Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, urging him to prioritize our region in the delivery of the Next Generation Delivery Vehicle.
The heat in South Texas is no joke, especially these past few weeks. Our letter carriers are using decades’ old trucks without air conditioning or airbags to deliver mail. As the rollout of the next generation of USPS vehicles begins this fall, South Texas needs to be a top priority for the safety and well-being of our letter carriers.

Questions to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen

On Tuesday, June 13, I questioned Secretary Yellen during a House Financial Services Committee hearing about the strength and dominance of the U.S. Dollar in the global market.

With some of our own allies calling for a move away from the Dollar, it’s important that we work to keep the dollar as the primary form of currency for international trade, not only for our economic wellbeing, but for our global leadership.

 Supporting Federal Student Loan Forgiveness

On Wednesday, June 21, I joined my Congressional Hispanic Caucus colleagues  on the steps of the U.S. Supreme Court to demand federal student loan forgiveness.

The student loan crisis not only hinders the American dream - it stifles innovation. I know the burden of student loans all too well; it limits your ability to buy a home, save, own a car, and invest in the economy. Which is why I have introduced bills to forgive up to $25,000 in federal student loan debt since coming to Congress. I am hopeful that the Supreme Court will vote in favor of President Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan. Image

On Wednesday, June 14, I had the honor of meeting with Upward Bound Program participants from South Texas at the U.S. Capitol! I am glad to see our students committed to pursuing higher education.  Image

Securing Funds to Support and Modernize Two Valley Airports

On Wednesday, June 21, I was happy to announce that Valley International Airport (VIA) will receive $2.7 million, and McAllen International Airport (MFE) will receive $6.2 million from the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Airport Improvement Program. This grant supports airports in their work to improve drainage systems, control erosion, and make our airfields safer.  Image
