Campaign for National Parks

The latest New Perspectives bursary project comes from Saira Niazi, who explores hidden gems and shares stories from the South Downs National Park.

Whilst working on the project, Saira was granted funding from the South Downs National Park to lead on a separate project that sought to engage people from urban areas by opening the South Downs to them through a series of Community Wanderings projects.

The project culminated in a series of portraits and a short film made by film-maker Luke Baker; all can be viewed on Saira’s website

NEW NATIONAL PARK DESIGNATION OFFICIALLY UNDERWAY

The potential designation of Wales’s first new National Park since 1957 has formally begun.

Proposals have been put forward, with Natural Resources Wales commissioned as the statutory body to undertake the designation process and public consultation.

An area of search is currently underway with the proposed area likely to be consulted upon from September 2024.

Campaign for National Parks wants to see this as an exemplar National Park which delivers for nature, people and the climate. We will be working hard to advocate for the best possible designation.

WELSH GOVERNMENT SHARES PROGRESS ON 30 X 30 TARGET

Welsh Government has committed to unlocking the potential of Designated Landscapes to do more for nature as part of their 30x30 target.

Since the Biodiversity Deep Dive in October, we’ve been keeping a close eye on what this means in practice, and the latest update from Government reflects a renewed drive for biodiversity improvements.

Management plans, however, are already being written and implemented through to 2028, so guidance and implementation of policy is needed at pace to deliver on 30x30.
