Updates on the Future of Outdoor Dining

The Chamber continues to champion for the continued expansion of outdoor dining and a streamlining of processes for restaurants.

On June 13, the County Board voted to advertise hearings on permanent outdoor dining rules at their July 15 Board Meeting. Between now and mid-July the County will be releasing information for restaurant operators regarding the general process by which operators must apply for permits for permanent outdoor dining areas. Following the expected adoption of the permanent rules on July 15, restaurants can begin the application process. The Chamber will be involved in disseminating all relevant information on the application and permitting process to restaurants once that information is provided by the County. Learn more about the County Food Study here.

DC News Now reached out to the Chamber for comment. CEO & President Kate Bates spoke on the status of outdoor dining, and facilitated the TV interview with Jose Machado, Shift Manager of ROCKLANDS Barbeque and Grilling Company.

Primary Election Results

Virginia’s primary elections took place on Tuesday, June 20. In Arlington, the only primary was on the Democratic side, since no Republican candidates filed before the primary deadline in April.

In the County Board primary, ranked choice voting was used for the first time. Maureen Coffey and Susan Cunningham were declared the Democratic nominees on June 24. They will be running in the general election where they will face Independent Audrey Clement and Republican Juan Carlos Fierro.

The results from the General Assembly races are:

  • HD-01: Incumbent Patrick Hope is running unopposed in the general election.
  • HD-02: Adele McClure won the primary for this open seat, and is now running unopposed.
  • HD-03: Incumbent Alfonso Lopez is running against Independent Major Mike Webb in the general election.
  • SD-39: Incumbent Adam Ebbin is running unopposed in the general election.
  • SD-40: Incumbent Barbara Favola was the victor of the primary, and will face Republican David Henshaw in the general election.
