Upcoming Farm Bill will impact Food Subsidies, Agriculture & Food Security

Please join Congresswoman Alma Adams for a special event at 11 AM on Thursday, June 29 at Johnson C. Smith University (Truist Auditorium in the New Science Building) to discuss the 2023 Farm Bill.

The theme of this year's Focus on Food event is "You Can't Be Healthy if You're Hungry." Our special guest for the day will be Congressman Jim McGovern, a senior member of the Agriculture Committee and the co-chair of the Congressional Hunger Caucus. A panel discussion with community leaders will address food and nutrition issues.

Every five years, Congress works on a Farm Bill that impacts everything from agriculture to food benefits. This is an opportunity to hear from our experts and voice your concerns about the Food Bill, especially on issues like food security, hunger, and health.

The government’s support for certain foods over others has a major impact on our diets. Almost 90% of Americans fall below the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for vegetables, and 80% fall below the RDA for fruit. Unfortunately, half of Americans’ caloric intake ([link removed]) comes from ultra-processed foods, made with the starches and sugars derived from corn and soybeans.

Farm subsidies also influence climate change, biodiversity and economic fairness. Marginalized farmers and communities have long been denied participation in agriculture programs and policy development. Speak up for a Farm Bill that supports human and planetary health. Everyone deserves access to healthy, affordable food! I very much want to continue the work I have started as your At-Large City Council member. I humbly ask for your vote in the upcoming primary election. Thank you!

Sincerely,
Dimple Ajmera
