[link removed] [[link removed]] John,
Back in February, CREW sued the DOJ for records on Trump’s claims that he “Sent in the FBI” to Florida to prevent Ron DeSantis from losing the 2018 gubernatorial race due to “voter fraud.” If true, that would have meant he used government resources to attempt to sway a race in favor of a political ally.
Now, we’ve heard back:
The Department of Justice has no records of then-President Donald Trump sending federal agents to Florida in 2018 to help Ron DeSantis win the governorship.
Our story about Trump and DeSantis today isn't the first time the government told us that it doesn't have documents to back up one of Trump's outlandish claims.
This once again shows Trump’s tenuous relationship with the truth — especially regarding election fraud — goes back a long time.
Trump’s Big Lie led to the January 6th insurrection and attack on the Capitol. In attempting to show that DeSantis was only elected with his help, Trump again pushed claims of election fraud and stolen votes – but went even further to profess that he personally used federal law enforcement to stop it.
We’re relieved that Trump does not seem to have actually abused his power in that way — but it’s still concerning that he peddled further baseless election claims that undermine our democracy and are not supported by the facts.
CREW is fighting back to defend our democratic institutions, and speak truth to Trump’s claims.
