John,
A year ago today, the U.S. Supreme Court officially overturned Roe v. Wade.
The Dobbs decision was a devastating blow to the fundamental rights of women, and the legal implications were almost immediately felt.
Republican-led states used this decision to enact sweeping, in-state bans on abortions. We saw activist attorneys general move to invalidate FDA approval on a widely-used abortion medication, mifepristone. That’s had an impact on access to reproductive care even in Democratic states like California.
In addition to women’s rights, many can’t help but ask: “what's next?” Roe v. Wade is the legal foundation that protects same-sex marriage. The concern among many in the LGBTQ+ community is that its reversal could lead to a roll back for equality.
One thing is clear: it's never been more urgent that we retake and hold a majority in Congress in order to pass bills like the Women’s Health Protection Act, which would codify Roe v. Wade into federal law.
It's also a reminder that who we elect can have a lifetime of consequences. Right-wing politicians like Ken Calvert have opposed choice for decades, and leaving them unchecked would only further erode our rights.
Voters across the 41st District have an opportunity to unseat a Republican in Ken Calvert who has been one of the staunchest allies of the anti-choice movement. This is an important chance to send a message that we are ready to take back the majority and protect our constitutional rights. Lives are literally at stake.
If you’re with me, please make an urgent $3 contribution to my campaign for Congress in this critical swing seat. Let’s take back the majority and codify Roe v. Wade into federal law.
Thanks,
Will
