Friend, this week, temperatures reached over 120 degrees
in parts of Texas. Meanwhile, Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed a bill into law
that will roll back protective measures for construction workers (30% of whom
are immigrants nationwide) by overriding city ordinances that require water
breaks. It’s dangerous, cruel, anti-worker, and anti-immigrant.

Last year alone, there were 279 heat-related deaths in Texas and this rescission
of water breaks will only make matters worse. It will also disparately harm
undocumented workers, who may fear retaliation if they report dangerous
conditions at work. Abbott’s signing of this bill is a deadly, inhumane act that must not go
unchecked.

In Republicans’ race to the bottom, Abbott has once again stooped lower to harm
workers across Texas. This is a part of the growing pattern of extremism we are
seeing in GOP politicians across the country. That’s why we need folks like you,
friend, to support our work to ensure politicians who
have the same agenda as Abbott don’t get elected in 2024.
