Today is the one-year mark since the Dobbs ruling, the disastrous Supreme Court decision that undid 50 years of precedent and stripped tens of millions of women of their access to lifesaving reproductive care – in many states overnight.

We always knew that overturning Roe was the GOP’s top priority. It’s one of the reasons why I and dozens of other women ran for Congress in 2018. They were preparing for this for decades. Within hours of the Dobbs ruling, 13 GOP states across the country banned abortion thanks to “trigger laws” – designed to take effect automatically when Roe was repealed.

And in the year since Dobbs, six more states have passed laws that ban or significantly restrict abortion, bringing the total number to 19. That means in nearly 40% of U.S. states, a woman’s right to choose has been nullified.

I know it’s easy to get discouraged by all this, but there is still hope. In every state where abortion rights were on the ballot during last year’s midterms, Americans voted to protect lifesaving reproductive care. Three states enshrined abortion rights in their constitutions and two others rejected anti-abortion laws. The reason is simple: the American people do NOT support the GOP’s anti-choice agenda .

That’s why it’s critical that we keep fighting to defend the right to choose. Whether it’s testifying for the ROE Act here in Massachusetts, voting for the Women's Health Protection Act in Congress, introducing legislation to help providers navigate the post- Roe legal landscape, or so much more, I have always made it a top priority of mine to be at the forefront in the fight to protect abortion rights.
