One year ago today, we found ourselves in a changed America. The radical Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade stripped away a constitutional freedom that was law for nearly 50 years and handed over our health care decisions to judges and politicians rather than women and their doctors.
In one swoop, the Supreme Court took away a right that I and multiple generations of women have always had and always thought we would have.
On this somber anniversary, I wanted to share a personal message to all Washingtonians about how I’m committed, with every part of me, to defend and strengthen reproductive freedom in our state. Please take a couple of minutes to watch my message straight away.
As your governor, I will ensure Washington remains a beacon of reproductive freedom, not just for women in Washington but for women in neighboring states, too. I will stand against extremist efforts to roll back our rights, and I will prioritize new legislation that protects access to reproductive health care, especially for women in rural areas. And together, we will protect these fundamental freedoms that generations of women grew up with, are protected for generations to come.
